Essay Types
What are essays? An essay is a written work that presents a specific aspect of the author’s perspective. However the definition of an essay can be vague and overlaps with the definitions of an article, review, essay, novel, or short story. Essays can be classified as either formal or informal. Formal essays, like those that are awarded major literary prizes are written in the style of scholarly research, using scholarly language, within the context of a particular, literature-based topic, often using references to the work they are analyzing. Informal essays, also sometimes called ”general” essays, are written for the sake of variety and as a way to express oneself typically about daily life.
Essays can be as long as one page, or up to thirty-five pages, and include an array of styles and topics. Students begin writing essays based on the task that they have selected, and can choose to write one or more essays per semester or quarter. While most universities require at least a certain number of essays be written for each semester of classes, students may choose to take more writing essay courses or double up. There are several styles that can be used for different types and types of essays, in addition to the standard structure. Argumentative essays are among the most popular types of expository compositions. A persuasive essay must provide strong arguments for a particular argument.
